Prostate Cancer: How Your Diet Plays a Role

Friday, 05 Nov 2010 09:41 AM

The symptoms associated with prostate cancer, the most commonly occurring cancer in the elderly, can be alleviated if you follow a healthy dietary plan. A prescribed diet may help alleviate the severity of the symptoms of the disease.

Diet for prostate cancer:
The diet for prostate cancer includes regular intake of green vegetables and fruits along with a low intake of carbohydrates. The diet should also contain food substances rich in fiber content, selenium, and zinc.

Soy in the prostate cancer diet:
Soy and products like soy milk and tofu should be added to the prostate cancer diet as their intake may decrease the severity of the disease. Men who consume soy and soy products regularly may reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer in the future.

Tomatoes in prostate cancer diet:
Tomatoes have provided promising results in the treatment of prostate cancer as they are rich in lycopene, an antioxidant. Lycopene eliminates the toxic oxidants produced both by the body and the cancerous cells. The inclusion of tomatoes and products like tomato sauce in the diet is very important.

Role of selenium in prostate cancer diet:
Selenium is an antioxidant that eliminates the toxic oxidants from the body. Selenium is found in a variety of food substances like eggs, lean meat, seafood, and garlic. Patients with prostate cancer are advised to consume plenty of garlic, seafood, and eggs.

Milk and its products in prostate cancer diet:
Research has proven that the inclusion of milk and milk products in the diet may decrease the occurrence of prostate cancer in men. Since milk and milk products like butter, cheese, and curd are rich in calcium, they reduce the occurrence of prostate cancer. Inclusion of such products in the diet helps in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Zinc:
Seafood such as oyster and crab are rich in zinc. The intake of seafood may help treat prostate cancer.

Vegetables and fruits:
Inclusion of vegetables like broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, carrots, kale, and yams that are rich in antioxidants is helpful when a patient is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. All fruits, especially those rich in vitamin C, should be included in the diet for better results.
