It's good to be political royalty, especially during the holiday season. Take a look at these extravagant gift exchanges between the President and other foreign leaders.
According to the White House, the Obamas gave Queen Elizabeth II a collection of rare memorabilia and photographs in a handmade leather bound volume. The collection chronologically depicts her parents’ visits to the U.S in 1939. It was the first time in history that a reigning British monarch visited the U.S.
The Obamas were also generous to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, when it came to gift giving. The couple gave the Prince a custom-made set of Fell Pony bits and shanks along with the original horseshoes worn by the champion carriage horse Jamaica. All of the equestrian gifts were embossed with the Presidential seal.
According to the palace staff, gifts given to the Obamas were equally opulent including a collection of correspondences between Queen Victoria and various presidents, extracted from the royal Archives. Included in the volume is a letter between William McKinley and Queen Victoria.
Mrs. Obama didn’t get the short end of the stick either. She was given an antique broach in the form of roses constructed with gold and red coral.
