After years of casting trouble, it was declared on Monday that “Gossip Girl” nice-guy Penn Badgley will portray rocker Jeff Buckley in one of the two upcoming biopics about the late singer-songwriter, who died in a freak drowning accident in 1997.

The film will be called “Greetings from Tim Buckley” and will reportedly take place during the days leading up to Buckley’s legendary debut at a 1991 tribute concert to his late father Tim.

The plot is said to revolve around romance for Buckley and the musician’s journey to “understand the father who abandoned him,” says the production company behind the project.

Many have doubts as to whether Badgley will be able to effectively fill the role of brooding musician Buckley, whose life was tragically ended at age 30 when he drowned in Tennessee’s Wolf River.

Filming will begin in New York City in August.
