Should I Eat Organic Foods?

Wednesday, 01 Jun 2011 12:35 PM

The recent buzz in relation to nutrition is about eating organic foods. Let’s see the benefits of eating organic foods.

Why eat organic foods
Organic foods involve minimal processing and therefore retain more nutrients and fiber than do foods produced and processed using conventional methods. Production of organic foods involves fewer artificial methods and no chemical ripening, food irradiation, or genetically modified ingredients.

Also, research has shown organic foods to be much richer in micronutrients and mineral content. Hence, eating organic foods is good for health.

Benefits of organic foods:
• Eating “certified organic foods” helps avoid allergies, growth problems, and asthma, as organic farming does not use harmful chemicals and pesticides.
• In addition to better taste and sweetness, organic fruits and vegetables have better texture and firmness and higher nutrient content.
• Organic farming allows the soil to be sustainable and helps maintain the ecosystem in perfect balance. Therefore, eating organic foods is environmentally friendly.

Eating organic during pregnancy
During pregnancy, the body requires more nutrition. Foods to eat during pregnancy should be natural, fresh, and organic health foods as they are devoid of any chemicals and pesticides. Organically grown fruits, vegetables, and grains are especially recommended.
