Billionaire media tycoon Oprah Winfrey will receive her first Oscar, AFP
The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is given out intermittently by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences, the same organization that is responsible for nominating and awarding Oscars.
Winfrey was nominated for best supporting actress in 1986 for her work in “The Color Purple,” but did not win the Oscar.
The Academy said that since her nomination 25 years ago, Oprah has become "one of the most influential figures in entertainment and philanthropy. She has been especially dedicated to supporting educational initiatives and raising awareness of issues that affect women and children, both in the United States and around the globe.”
Oprah will receive the award at the Governor Awards dinner on November 12 and join the ranks of past award winners including Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor, and Audrey Hepburn.
