5 Most Unique Swings in Golf

By Brande Plotnick   |   Friday, 12 May 2017 10:53 AM

Golf is a highly individual sport. Even though all golfers share the goal of getting the ball in the hole in the fewest number of swings, the ways they go about it are as individual as fingerprints. Even the pros have their quirks.

Here are some of the game’s most unique swings and their proud owners:

1. Eammon Darcy – This Irish golfer may have had an unconventional swing, but it earned him four victories on the European Tour, and he competed in the Ryder Cup four times, according to Golf Magazine. What makes this swing so unusual is the positioning of Darcy’s arms in the beginning and the “whirlybird” motion that follows.

2. Arnold Palmer According to the Golf Channel, this golf legend won 62 PGA tour titles with his signature swing. He didn’t so much swing his club as he violently smashed the ball, finishing with a crouching corkscrew.

3. Jim FurykThe Bleacher Report says that, although Furyk’s swing is indeed strange-looking, it has earned him some major wins, including the 2010 FedEx Cup. The swing is characterized by a double overlapping grip, a looping takeaway to the outside, and finally a looping drop back to the inside on the downswing.

4. Moe Norman – This Canadian champ was shy and eccentric, says the Golf Channel, and while his personality may have limited his pro career, his unorthodox swing earned him two Canadian PGA titles. He was known for how straight he could hit the ball using his rigid arm position and minimal hand and knee action.

5. Nancy Lopez – This LPGA superstar won 48 tournaments, four team events, and three majors with her unusual swing that she herself described once as, “no uglier than Arnold Palmer’s” and “the same ugly swing every time.” Golf Magazine says her swing is characterized by a dramatically inside takeaway and the club pointing well right of the target at the top.
