Michelle Obama will appear on the August 2011 cover of Better Homes and Gardens, reports the Washington Post

The August cover of Better Homes and Gardens will feature the first lady sitting at a picnic table on the White House lawn, with a smile on her face, wearing a blue and white print dress and yellow sweater.

“Last year, research with our readers showed this really high priority moms have when it comes to healthy eating,” Gayle Butler, editor in chief, said of the decision to put Michelle on the cover.michelle obama better homes and gardens cover

The inside cover story features students from Harriet Tubman Elementary school in Washington engaging in a picnic lunch with Mrs. Obama. The photo spread will include pictures of chard and healthy eating tips for children.

“ [Michelle Obama] is thrilled to share the story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Let’s Move! With the millions of Americans who read” the magazine, Kristina Schake, communications director for the first lady, said in a statement.

The magazine has only featured one other public figure on its cover; actor Cliff Robertson. Mamie Eisenhower was once featured, but was given an inside article, not a cover.

Better Homes and Gardens is the nation’s third-largest magazine in paid circulation and the largest women’s magazine in the nation.
