June 14 Holidays

Tuesday, 14 Jun 2011 12:13 PM

Need a reason to celebrate? Today, June 14, offers a variety of holidays to keep you feeling cheerful. Just a few of today’s special causes are listed here:

Blood Type Awareness Day: Everyone knows their eye color, hair color, weight, and height, but do you know your own blood type? This seldom-used piece of information is actually very important. Giving or receiving blood requires that an individual know his or her blood type. Further, knowing your own blood type is invaluable in the case of an emergency medical situation. So take the time to learn a little more about yourself, and find out your blood type today.

World Blood Donor Day: Take time today to celebrate some of the world’s unsung heroes: blood donors. Each person who chooses to donate blood helps to save a life without expecting anything in return. The overwhelming majority of the world’s population lacks access to safe blood, with just 38 percent of the 80 million units of blood collected every year going to developing nations. Take the time to give blood, or to recognize the kindness of those who do.

Happy Birthday, Blue! June 14, 2011, marks the 15th birthday of Blue, the beloved star of Nickelodeon’s “Blue’s Clues.” The sensationally popular children’s show premiered in September of 1996, and has been critically acclaimed as one of the most ground-breaking children’s shows in history. Though production of the show ceased in 2006, millions of preschoolers worldwide continue to follow the adventures of Blue and the gang.
