One of the major casualties of today’s fast-paced age is our sex life. The stress we take on leads to low energy levels and that leads to a low sex drive. Here are ten ways to have a healthy sex life:

1.       Throw that stress out
Stress wreaks havoc on a good sex life. The best way to deal with stress is to make time for your personal life too. Don’t get so caught up with your work life that you start neglecting yourself and your partner. Pamper yourself by spending quality time with your family and friends. Try some breathing exercises. This will help you de-stress.

2.       Stop, or better still, reduce smoking
Smoking drags your energy levels down and with it, your sex drive as well. Since nicotine constricts blood vessels and reduces the blood flow to your vital sexual organs, it can interfere with your sexual performance in the longer run. It is advisable to stop or reduce the intake of nicotine for a healthy sex life.

3. Get physical
Regular exercise can help you your regain your libido and keep it active. Exercise releases hormones that add to the vitality of your sex life and can bring back much-needed action in your bedroom. Opt for exercises that improve your muscle tone and flexibility. Pilates, or any exercise that works on your core muscles, is good to tone up your core area. Women can benefit from Kegel exercises that strengthen pelvic muscles.

4.       Eat right
Apart from exercising, it is important to maintain high energy levels for a satisfactory sex life. The food you eat can make a real difference to your energy. Make sure that you are eating a healthy diet that gives you enough energy to keep you going after a hectic day at work. Your diet should be low in fat and high in fiber and complex carbohydrates. Bedroom activity requires energy and effort and the right foods can make a huge difference here. Certain nutrients like zinc play an important role in sexual health. Seafood like oysters and clams are loaded with zinc, which may explain why they are considered to be aphrodisiacs.

5.       Talk to each other
Talking to your partner about your sexual preferences and positions can add spice to your sex life. Many times dullness in the bedroom can be solved by simple communication with your partner. Share some sex tips with each other — let your partner know what turns you on and what doesn’t. Healthy physical intimacy is good for the bedroom.

6. Be sex literate
Updating yourself on sexual knowledge is your best investment for a healthy sex life. Keep a tab on various magazines and books that talk about sexuality. Next time you are at a bookstore, pick up a book on lovemaking tips and read it together in bed.

7. Build the tempo
Once in a while, make the effort to dress up your bedroom, making it conducive to a night of lovemaking. Light some nice-smelling candles and dim the lights. Put on some music. In short, make it an event. Aromatherapy is great for relaxation and for building the tempo. Try jasmine, musk, or ylang-ylang. Massaging each other adds to the buildup.

8. Get your forty winks
Inadequate sleep can be a bummer. Make sure you are getting enough sleep or you will be snoring when you are expected to be scoring.

9. Feel comfortable with your body
According to experts, one of the major reasons for a poor sex life is the poor image people have of themselves. It is absolutely essential to feel comfortable with one’s body when it comes to sex. Feelings of self-consciousness and embarrassment can rob the sexual act of its pleasure. The more you accept yourself as you are, the better the chances of having a healthy sex life.

10.   Experiment
Don’t get stuck in the same old routine. To make your sex life exciting, you should be open to adventure and be willing to experiment. Try different positions, buy some sex toys, indulge in some dirty talk, or role-play. There’s a world of possibilities out there.
