Schizoaffective disorder is a serious mental illness, which badly affects not only the patient but also the patient’s near and dear ones. The signs of schizoaffective disorder generally become apparent in early adulthood.

Schizoaffective disorder symptoms include a combination of symptoms of both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The specific reason behind this illness is still unknown, but a chemical imbalance in our brain is believed to be responsible for this complex mental condition. Two types of symptoms are found in these patients – depressive and manic.

In schizoaffective bipolar disorder, also known as affective bipolar disorder, patients express manic symptoms. Affective bipolar disorder patients suffer from symptoms such as sleep loss, severe distraction, irritability, severe mood swings, and sudden euphoria.

Depressive types of schizoaffective disorder symptoms include social inactivity, loss of appetite, excessive sleepiness, suicidal tendency, and a lack of interest. Other signs of schizoaffective disorder are hallucinations and disorganized thinking.

Treatment of schizoaffective disorder requires the use of different drugs along with behavior therapy and supportive psychotherapy.
