HCG – Human Chorionic Gonadotropin

Wednesday, 06 Oct 2010 03:06 PM

Human chorionic gonadotropin or human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone that is produced in early pregnancy in significant amounts, and is the hormone that is measured during pregnancy via blood and urine tests to confirm pregnancy. During pregnancy, hCG levels are increased as this hormone is also produced by the developing embryo.

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is the most important hormone that is to be synthesized in the phase of pregnancy for the prevention of corpus luteum of the uterine where the embryo is growing. The hCG level is the marker for confirmation of pregnancy and is also the marker for some kinds of tumors.

Human Chorionic gonadotropin has 244 amino acids with a molecular mass of 36.7 kDa that prevent the disintegration of corpus luteum by initiating the increased secretion of progesterone marking the presence of a fertilized ovum or the embryo. HCG also repels other immune cells and thereby prevents any harm to the developing embryo and protects it from being aborted in the first trimester. The hCG level is also the determining factor for morning sickness in pregnant women. HCG is extracted from the urine of pregnant women for fertility treatment .

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is extracted from urine conventionally and by genetic modification as marketed as Ovidrel®. The hCG level is measured in blood and urine. The hCG level is also a marker for germ cell tumors and gestational trophoblastic disease, expressed as b-hCG, despite the absence of embryo as evident from scanning and ultrasound reports. Thus, hCG tests are useful during pregnancy and also for detecting tumors.

Some of the uses of hCG are measurement of hCG levels in hCG early pregnancy for proper embryo development and b-hCG levels for detecting various kinds of cancers, including testicular cancer in men. HCG injections are used to stimulate ovulation in patients who are interested in IVF. These injections are also used during gestation to enhance the progesterone level. In the case of men, hCG injections are used to stimulate the production of testosterone. Also, hCG injections are administered in men for treating infertility diseases and hypogonadism. HCG injections are being used for enhancing weight loss. Further, the use of hCG injections for prevention of congenital transfer of infection between mother and child is being scrutinized.

An hCG diet is used as part of the regular diet regime for weight loss, and some simple meals include a tasty fruit salad consisting of blueberries, pineapple, bananas, and strawberries. A fishy food diet would include fish, lemon juice, salt and pepper and is baked. The hCG diet is also known as the pregnancy hormone diet, and hCG diet food can be purchased in many  medical stores through prescription only. Some of the foods that will induce hCG early pregnancy are fruits such as apples, oranges, grapes, and strawberries. Other foods that are good to include in an hCG diet are; meat of lamb and chicken, and vegetables like asparagus, broccoli, celery, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach, and tomato.
