How to Find the Best Dentist

Tuesday, 12 Oct 2010 03:36 PM

Finding a good dentist can be a challenging task these days. Finding a dentist who you are comfortable with and who is trained to treat your medical or cosmetic problems can be a tough job. To find a dental expert to treat you and your family requires a lot of research.
Finding a general dentist is a good place to start. Here are some tips for finding the best dentist in your area:
  • Research: Understanding the dental hierarchy is important. Usually, if you find a good general dental clinic they will refer you to other specialized dental practitioners including a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) if they can't treat you themselves.
  • Particulars: Before you decide on a dentist, there are a number of basic questions that you should ask them. How long has their practice been in operation? What are the surgeries that they are trained to perform? If they cannot perform certain procedures, ask about their referral network.
  • Referral System: It is advisable to ask your general dentist about their referral networks, and about other dentists they associate with. After thorough research about their referral network, you may come to understand the kind of services you are likely to get in the event of an emergency dental visit.
  • Options: Before selecting the dentist, ask them about the procedure you are looking for. A good dentist must be able to explain the pros and cons of any procedure or surgery to their patients. If they look impatient, or aren't able to guide you through the process of understanding the implications of the procedure, you should start thinking about going to another dentist.
  • Societies: Many dentists participate in various dental societies. Some of these societies even have good “further study programs” that enhance the dental surgeon’s knowledge and teaches them about new procedures and techniques in the field of dental medicine or dental surgery. Finding a good dentist who likes to be updated on the latest happenings in their field is a very good option.
  • Comfort: You are going to visit the dentist’s clinic very often. It is best if you ensure it is a comfortable place where you can feel relaxed under the care of your dental expert.
  • Emergency Services: It is also essential to ask your general dentist about their emergency care. Check if they have an emergency dentist who may be able to take care of you on short notice if anything goes wrong.
  • Insurance: You need to find a doctor that offers services and honors your insurance policy whether it is an HMO or a PPO. Usually, the people with an HMO policy are at an advantage as most dentists honor an HMO.
It is highly unlikely that you will find the perfect dentist that satisfies all your criteria. That’s why it is advisable to take some time to make your decision about a good dental practitioner.
