Scientists have already proven that sex drive differs between men and women. In terms of sexual dysfunction, both men and women may require treatment to ensure a healthy sex drive. For men, the problem was tackled with the invention of Viagra, which has worked wonders. The little blue pill worked and it became an instant success worldwide. Unfortunately, the same pill did not work as a female libido enhancer or female Viagra.
So, research is being conducted to find a female stimulation pill that will increase the female libido. Research results have shown promise with the advent of flibanserin.
Flibanserin: the female libido enhancer?
This revolutionary new drug was initially being tested for mood disorders at the University of North Carolina. Even though the drug turned out to be a very poor mood improver, it seemed to act as a female Viagra in lab test animals. As a result, researchers started to actively investigate the side effects with multiple clinical trials on human female stimulation, with the research being funded by the manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim. The results were astounding. Female human patients reported an increased female orgasm rate and it also acted as a female libido enhancer.
These interesting drug trials caused the world to wake up and take notice. The female Viagra contender drug was put up for FDA approval. However, since then, a few side effects and problems have been noted with the female libido enhancer. Patients have complained of effects like dizziness, nausea, and fatigue with the female Viagra pill. The reasoning for this is that female Viagra increases a woman's libido by working on the brain and balancing the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Even with these minimal side effects, the female Viagra drug has appeared to work.
FDA rejects Flibanserin as a female libido enhancer
News has not been promising for the so-called female Viagra pill. A ten-member FDA advisory board on June 16, 2010, voted against Flibanserin and its release to the general market as female Viagra due to its side effects. The FDA will have its own committee meeting, but the general consensus is that the drug will no longer be called the female Viagra. S
Is the search for a female Viagra and a female libido enhancer over?
No. On the contrary, the race has intensified. Over the years, market research has showed that women are tired. Doing more than 40 hours of house work and office work and rearing children can make women tired and really lower their libido. Testosterone gels, DHEA, and L-arginine amino acid creams are already being used by women to boost libido. A market study by BioSante Pharmaceuticals Inc showed that its testosterone gel (libigel) has doubled in sales, demonstrating the market for female Viagra.
The news has been more promising with the discovery of bremelanotide. This new contender for the crown of female Viagra is being made by Palatin Technologies and is now generating a huge buzz. The fast acting inhalant could be the answer for female sexual problems. Research is still underway but the sources are very confident.
Will we finally find the fountain of eternal female sexual satisfaction? An answer to the age old “Not tonight, darling. I have a headache?” We can certainly hope.
