Dysnomia: The Latest Medical Breakthroughs

Monday, 27 Sep 2010 04:25 PM

Dysnomia can be described as a medical condition in which the affected individual is not able to extract the right word from their memory when they wish to use it. This disorder affects the speaking and writing skills of the individual.

Different treatment approaches have been recommended by medical practitioners. Research studies in this field have effectively come up with information on the causes of dysnomia and the latest treatment for dysnomia. The cause of dysnomia can range from heredity to accident.

If the cause of dysnomia is brain trauma, which could include injury or stroke, then the most important role in the treatment of dysnomia is played by the speech pathologist. They may use different types of speech exercises to improve recall. Language therapy is generally recommended by most of the practitioners when trauma is the categorical cause of dysnomia. It is recommended that language therapy be initiated as soon as possible, and it should also be customized according to the needs of the patients when treating dysnomia.

If developmental issues are identified as the prime cause, then the treatment of dysnomia may actually be difficult. This is because, in this case, either due to genetic reasons or due to some other reason, the area of the brain that deals with word recall is not completely developed. It has been noticed that in children, this condition may lessen or may disappear as they grow.

At times, certain medicines taken by the individual may also be the cause of dysnomia. In this case, as soon as the cause is identified, alternative medicines may be recommended. According to some studies, antidepressant drugs have been found to help dysnomic patients.

One of the latest medical breakthroughs that has been recognized as a treatment technique for dysnomia is Semantic Feature Analysis (SFA). This treatment is primarily aimed at improving the lexical retrieval and this is achieved by increasing the level of activation within a semantic network.
