Dermatitis: Top 5 Symptoms

Friday, 04 Feb 2011 12:08 PM

Itchy rashes regularly appearing on your skin could be dermatitis, a term used to describe a variety of skin rashes. Dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin and is typically marked by red, itchy patches, fluid-filled blisters, or crusty scales. Certain types of dermatitis affect only specific parts of the body, while other types may occur anywhere. The following are some of the top symptoms of dermatitis:

1. Itchy rashes confined to only one area or a part of the body. Plants like poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac are known to lead to this type of dermatitis. Many people may experience negative reactions to synthetic substances like soaps, fibers, nail polish remover, antiperspirants, and household chemicals, and plated or artificial jewelry.

2. Coin-shaped red rashes appear on the legs, hands, arms, and chest or upper body. A dry environment or taking repeated hot showers can lead to this type of dermatitis.

3. Skin may become itchy, swell, develop scales, or blister. These are the symptoms of atopic dermatitis, or eczema. Mostly hereditary, atopic dermatitis is often related to stress, allergy, or asthma.

4. Certain people may react in an allergic manner to wheat protein gluten. This is a disorder that appears as a result of a gastrointestinal condition, known as celiac disease. This type of dermatitis is known as herpetiformis and is very rare among Asians and Africans.

5. Continuous scratching and rubbing that leads to thickening and hardening of the skin is also another symptom of dermatitis.

Dermatitis is often treated with prescribed cortisone creams and lotions. These must be used with care because they cause the skin to become thinner and more fragile with long-term use. Since dermatitis severely dries out the skin, keeping the affected area moistened with vitamin A, D, or E can quicken the healing process.
