In a mysterious phenomenon, animals at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. seem to have sensed the major east coast earthquake before it was detected, reports Newser.

Seconds before the ground shook, gorillas and orangutans dropped their food and rushed to grab their young and climb to safety. The zoo’s flamingos also huddled together, and an elephant made an unusual bellowing noise just prior to the quake.

Most astonishing is the fact that red-ruffled lemurs sounded an alarm cry a full 15 minutes before the earthquake.

The gorillas and other animals that sensed the quake might have been responding to the weaker primary wave generated around 15 seconds before an earthquake. But, since this has not been proven, it’s possible the animals might have reacted to signals still undiscovered by humans, says a government seismologist.
