Attorney Bill Shaeffer, a legal analyst for WFTV-Channel 9 says there's an insatiable appetite for the Casey Anthony story, and the rise of social media heightens the interest in Anthony, predicting that she will be paid for an interview.
"You can't make this stuff up," Sheaffer said. "It was one surprise after another in this trial, and wasn't the final surprise the verdict? Made for TV, my friend."
"I'd be surprised if we don't see a competition to interview this woman," said Tom Rosenstiel, director of the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism. "
The networks have been maneuvering around the long-standing prohibition on paying sources for interviews on television for a long time. They pay for videotape."
ABC News paid $200,000 to license photos and video from Anthony in 2008 before she was charged in the child's death, The Orlando Sentinel
Jane Velez-Mitchell, HLN host, seriously doubts that Anthony could become a multimillionaire. Velez-Mitchel cites the failure to turn O.J. Simpson’s story into entertainment sensation after he was acquitted in the killing of his ex-wife and her friend. His book, "If I Did It," became a publishing fiasco in 2006, resulting in the cancelation of the book and TV special and the firing of publisher Judith Reagan.
"It was a huge embarrassment," Velez-Mitchell said. "Any major corporation will have very, very serious qualms about giving her [Anthony] money because it might not be worth it for the negative publicity.”
But some maintain the public is still interested, not believing the Casey Anthony story is really over.
"I think everybody would love to hear her story, true or not," said Orlando attorney Richard Hornsby, a legal analyst for WESH-Channel 2. "America just wants to consume this kind of dysfunction. It's a story that will never end. The public will never have closure, so the story becomes more valuable."
Skeptics like Velez-Mitchell think a deal would work better if Casey Anthony’s mother, Cindy, does it.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that Hirsch of Vivid Entertainment has offered Anthony an opportunity as a porn star. In an email sent to the Sentinel on Wednesday, Hirsch said, “We are offering Casey Anthony a starring role in an upcoming feature film. She would get to review the script with our writer and make any suggested changes on the plot that she wants and would be able to choose her own partners.”
By late Wednesday, the offer was rescinded.
