If you want to lose weight quickly and are looking for a short-term addition to your weight loss plan, then you may want to consider the cabbage detox diet. Although considered a fad diet plan by the nutritional community, dieters and followers of this drastic weight loss plan swear by the cabbage soup diet’s amazing results.

Before you choose to follow the cabbage soup diet, also referred to as the “General Motors Diet” or the “Military Cabbage Diet,” you must consider the details of the diet and understand the pros and cons. Since the diet plan is based on strict restrictions, it is advisable to consult a qualified dietician or physician before starting the cabbage soup diet.

The cabbage diet is a very low calorie diet plan with cabbage soup being the core food consumed during the diet. Dieters are allowed to drink cabbage soup as many times as they want throughout the day along with certain specified approved foods. The diet needs to be adhered to for a week and promises to provide up to 10 pounds of weight loss.

The cabbage soup is prepared by cooking onions, peppers, cabbage, celery, and tomatoes. Seasonings added to render some flavor to the basic cabbage soup may vary from salt, pepper, or bouillon cubes to curry powder and soy sauce. There are many variations to the exact recipe for cabbage soup preparations, but the chief ingredients typically remain the same.

If adhering to a traditional cabbage soup diet, you should follow these guidelines:

Day 1: Drink unlimited cabbage soup and a range of fresh fruits, excluding bananas.

Day 2: Drink unlimited cabbage soup and cooked vegetables including potatoes. A pat of butter may be added for taste.

Day 3: Drink unlimited cabbage soup and as many fruits and vegetables as you want excluding potatoes and bananas.

Day 4: Drink unlimited cabbage soup and as much skimmed milk as possible. Include up to 6 to 8 bananas in the day’s menu.

Day 5: Drink unlimited cabbage soup and eat around 10 to 15 ounces of beef. Add six tomatoes and, if you prefer, replace the beef with broiled or baked chicken and fish.

Day 6: Drink unlimited cabbage soup and eat vegetables and beef. Avoid baked potatoes and limit beef to two to three steaks maximum.

Day 7: Drink unlimited cabbage soup and include brown rice, cooked vegetables (except potatoes), and unsweetened fruit juices. Stay away from carbonated beverages, alcohol, and breads for the entire duration of the diet.

An effective cabbage diet is often used as an intermediate to kick start your metabolism in the midst of a long-term, healthy, balanced weight loss diet regime.
