What Causes Bipolar Disorder?

Thursday, 23 Jun 2011 04:43 PM

Bipolar disorder is a very complex mental illness with no single cause. It is a common misconception to believe that bipolar disorder is of the patients own doing. It is important to remember that and individual has virtually no control over whether or not he or she will suffer from bipolar disorder.

Science has largely proven that there is some degree of a genetic factor to bipolar disorder. Many genes and chromosomes have been linked with the onset and progression of the illness.

Biological factors, such as varying levels of neurotransmitters (small chemical substances that travel between cells in the brain) can cause bipolar disorder.

Environmental factors such as being overly stressed or depressed can lead to bipolar disorder. In fact, environmental factors are thought to be the main elements that impact bipolar disorder.
