The body has a remarkable ability to compensate for early anemia. Because of this, mild anemia or anemia that has developed over a long period of time may go unnoticed.

The symptoms of anemia vary according to the type of anemia, its cause, and if it is the result of any underlying health conditions. If anemia results from another health problem, symptoms of that illness may become apparent first.

Common symptoms of anemia include:
  • Fatigue and loss of energy
  • Unusually rapid heartbeat, especially during exercise
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Dizziness
  • Pale skin
  • Leg cramps
  • Insomnia

Each different type of anemia may have symptoms specifically related to that type of anemia. Your doctor will be able to identify which type of anemia you may have based on these unique symptoms.

Your doctor should be notified immediately if you notice any of these signs of anemia:
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Breathlessness
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Pale skin
