A diet rich in iron and vitamin C, vitamin B12, and folic acid is recommended for managing anemia. These can be taken as vitamin supplements or by adding certain foods to your diet.
Good sources of iron are found in animal proteins — especially red meat, egg yolks, spinach, fortified cereals, and beans.
For some, anemia is not simply caused by a deficient diet, so iron supplements may be necessary. Vitamin C sources, such as citrus fruits, improve the bio-availability of iron.
Anemia can be caused by unnecessary dieting and over-exercise. Also, excessive consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine causes the body to absorb iron poorly. Avoid over-consumption of these substances.
