How to Start Your Own Website

Tuesday, 23 Nov 2010 11:44 AM

Nowadays, nearly anyone with a little time and a few dollars can create a website. To create a website, you need to:

start your own website

— Choose or decide on a domain name and register it. A domain name is something that looks like “yourwebsite.com” or “yourwebsite.net.” The domain name represents the URL (Uniform Resource Locator), which is the permanent web address of your website, and is registered annually. A domain name can cost you anything from $10 to $50 per year.

— Get a web host and sign up for an account. You can choose from several web hosting services. An Internet web hosting service enables individuals and organizations to make their website accessible through the World Wide Web. Web hosting can cost anywhere between $10 to several thousand dollars per month. Often, web hosting is provided as part of a general Internet access plan; there are several free web hosting services, but most often these also come with certain limitations. Be sure to check on that before you decide to have a website for free.

— Design or create the web pages of your website. The website design depends on the content, usability, the desired look, and arrangement. You can build or create your website yourself or use a website builder.

— Once you have designed your website, it is a good idea to test it. There are several web test tools available for this purpose. Also, there are many website monitoring tools. Most of these are easily available online.

— You can also make money through your website. If you are going to use your website to sell products or services, you will need to add credit card payment facilities to your website.

— Promote your website. Draw traffic to your website or get your site noticed. You can do so by submitting to search engines like Google and Bing. In case your website is already linked to other websites, there will be no need to submit to search engines. They will probably find you on their own by following the links on those websites.

There are many online sites that offer to help you start your own website in minutes. These can be really helpful, but it is important to check into the sites before taking their help.
