The cost of college education is indeed huge and sometimes requires students to seek financial assistance in the form of scholarships and grants. In the absence of such monetary assistance, needy students have to take out large loans to pay off their educational fees and meet other expenses. The state of Colorado, like other states, has some scholarships for Colorado residents. Let’s take a look at the five best:

1. The College in Colorado Scholarship: This is the most popular scholarship for Colorado residents. This scholarship is open to all students who have managed to maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher throughout high school. The financial contribution can be as much as $1,500 for students in every discipline. You can apply for this scholarship through the online FAFSA.
2. Colorado Educational Services and Development Association Diversity Scholarship (CESDA): This is a special scholarship for Colorado residents who are financially strapped. It was created in the memory of a Vietnam veteran and coal miner, Gilbert Martinez. This Colorado scholarship has helped thousands of students over the last thirty years with over $20,000 in scholarships. The applicant, apart from being a resident of Colorado, must be a first-generation student, or member of a racial or ethnic minority that is underrepresented, and/or be in need of financial assistance. Also, they must be a graduating high school senior from a Colorado high school. The selection criteria include: leadership, community service, academic record, personal as well as professional achievements, special abilities, and academic goals.
3. Denver Scholarship Foundation scholarship: This is another popular Colorado scholarship. This program offers full-time DSF financial aid to students from 9th to 12th grade. For this scholarship, students have to attend a public school and maintain a certain GPA. They have the option of renewing their scholarships after five years to continue their college education. The foundation also encourages online applications through its website.
4. The Colorado Masons Benevolent Fund: This fund generates its own scholarship that is very popular with local Colorado residents. The eligibility criteria require that the student be a graduating senior from a public high school and continue to study higher education in the state of Colorado. The actual number of scholarships varies from year to year. The fund also offers vocational and educational grants  to eligible applicants for about $7,000 a year, renewable for five years.
5. The LEAD Foundation scholarship: This scholarship is for students who have overcome a learning disability. Students who are in high school have to apply online by February each year. The actual financial amount will vary from year to year.
