Many students who wish to pursue higher education are unable to do so because of inadequate funding to attend college or a vocational institution. The state of Maryland, however, has started providing scholarships for state residents for their pursuit of post-secondary education. These scholarships are aimed at increasing technical and vocational skills of the residents of Maryland and improving their job opportunities by enabling them to attend colleges and universities in the state.

Some of the best scholarships that are available for the residents of Maryland are listed below:
 
1.  The Distinguished Scholar Award: This is a merit based Maryland scholarship that is awarded to a junior in high school who is going to attend a school in Maryland for higher studies. Finalists of the National Merit Scholarship as well as the National Achievement Scholarships may also receive this scholarship. An award of $3,000 is granted each year to students who exhibit high academic standards in their cumulative GPA and SAT scores with a minimum of a 3.7 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
 
2. The Jack F. Tolbert Student Memorial Program: This is a Maryland scholarship offered to students who plan to attend a private career school. This scholarship for Maryland residents is administered by Federal Student Aid. All students residing in Maryland can apply for this scholarship, which grants up to $500 to a student in a need-based condition.
 
3. The Distinguished Scholar Community College Transfer Program: This is a scholarship awarded to residents of Maryland who have completed at least 60 hours in a Maryland Community College and want to transfer to a four-year program of higher education in Maryland. This is a need-based scholarship awarded to a Maryland resident and includes a sum of $3,000. In order to be eligible for this Maryland scholarship, students must have a total GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
 
4. Nurse Support Program II: The Nurse Support Program II is the best nursing scholarship in Maryland and is aimed at recruiting and retaining nurses in Maryland hospitals. This nursing scholarship program provides funding for Living Expenses Grant as well as Graduate Nursing Faculty Scholarship by the HSCRC. This fund includes a grant of $13,000 per year as tuition fees for Maryland residents who want to continue their education in nursing.
 
5. The Janet L. Hoffman Loan Assistance Repayment Program: This is a scholarship for low-income Maryland residents and those  who provide public service in Maryland or the local government. This is one of the best Maryland scholarships and is offered to lawyers, school teachers, and other persons working in public service sectors.
 
There are a number of other need- and merit-based scholarships offered to residents of Maryland. These Maryland scholarships are generally administered by the Maryland Higher Education Commission to improve the state of education and employment in Maryland.
