There are a number of scholarships for Indiana residents available that cover a substantial part of tuition costs and reduce the need for loan assistance. While the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana (SSACI) plays a key role in providing scholarships in the state of Indiana, needy college-bound residents can avail other scholarships through their respective colleges and universities. Here are the five best scholarships for Indiana residents:

1. The Nina Mason Pullium Legacy Scholars Program is an Indiana state scholarship for disadvantaged adolescents, young adults under the child welfare system, and those suffering from physical handicaps. This Indiana scholarship covers the cost of tuition, while providing an annual stipend of $2,500. However, this scholarship for Indiana residents is provided only at Indiana University, Ivy Tech Community College (at Indianapolis), and Purdue University (at Indianapolis).

2. Nursing Scholarship is another scholarship for Indiana residents interested in pursuing specialized nursing education with a promise of serving the state for two years. This Indiana scholarship offers a maximum annual benefit of $5,000 toward tuition fees and requires that the student be accepted in a state nursing program.

3. Indiana Higher Education Award and Indiana Freedom of Choice Grants are need-based state scholarships offered at the undergraduate level. While both cover only the tuition costs of needy students in undergraduate programs, the latter is specifically meant for those enrolled in private colleges in Indiana. While over 41,000 students were covered last year by the Indiana Higher Education Awards, about 11,000 students were covered by the Indiana Freedom of Choice Grant.

4. The Minority Teacher/Special Services Scholarship is another scholarship offered in the state of Indiana. It is exclusively available to minority students (African American/Black or Hispanic/Latino) enrolled in a full-time certification program for teaching or physical therapy. This Indiana scholarship requires the applicant to serve at a state facility after graduation.

5. Several merit-based scholarships are available for students applying to colleges and universities in Indiana. Of these, the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship is the most popular. This Indiana scholarship is awarded based on SAT, ACT, or GED scores, and offers an award of $1,500. Over 500 students benefit from this scholarship annually.

Apart from the above scholarships for Indiana residents, there are supplemental grants for children of serving army officers and public service officers such as Child of Veteran and Public Safety Officer Supplemental Grant Programs. Often, these grants are substantial and help fund the entire tuition costs of qualified students.
