As the Oxygen network prepares to debut its “Preachers of L.A.” reality show next month, a number of Christian groups are already complaining that the show makes a mockery of religion.

The show takes us inside the lives of several preachers who at first glance seem to believe the road to heaven is best traveled in luxury automobiles, big houses, and flashy clothes.

However, if the previews we saw today are any indication of what's to come, there is hope for some genuine "come to Jesus" moments in store.

I had a chance to sit down with Bishop Ron and his wife First Lady LaVette Gibson, two stars of the program that is set to air on Oct. 9.

I asked them whether they believe that God is going to use the medium to help them reach souls.

“I know he’s going to use this medium to reach souls,” countered Pastor Gibson. “We’ve come to the kingdom at such a time as this God has anointed us, appointed us. Now he’s launching us out into the deep to win the loss through the power of Pentecost, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. So I know it’s not accidental but it’s providential.

"It’s that time because time is winding up and people were dying without the hope of salvation and God has prepared us for such a time as this.”

His wife, LaVette, believes her husband was picked by God to spread his message from this unlikely pulpit.

“There’s no doubt about it that this is God’s assignment and it’s a God moment and I am honored that the lord selected my husband first,” she explained. “He entrusted him with this opportunity to really speak to the society of today about issues today — Christian family life today and getting the Gospel to people that may never watch Christian television.

“They may never turn on a Christian television station but they might be watching ‘Bad Girls Club’ on Oxygen and hopefully right after that will be the ‘Preachers of L.A.’ and they’re going to be ministered to,” she added.

“They are going to be blessed because these preachers are opening up their eyes and they’re sharing real life things that they go through and I think they’ll relate and they’ll be ministered to as they journey through their lives.”

The “Preachers of L.A.” was previewed in Atlanta thanks to local Christian radio host Darlene McCoy, who is also a recent convert to the show’s potential.

“I was taken aback in the beginning and everybody knows that I am very vocal on Praise 102.5,” she acknowledged. “I had an opportunity to see the first episode and I am 100 percent behind this show.

“This is a show that the kingdom needs to support, not only the kingdom. We’re going to see that the mainstream will support it as well because this is real ministry,” she insisted. “The ‘P’ factor is they are lifting up Jesus and Jesus said, ‘If I be lifted up I will draw all men up to me.’ And what better way to lift up Jesus among every man on a network like Oxygen? This is incredible. I’m excited about it. We’re just going to support it 100 percent.”

After experiencing the preview, I'm inclined to join Darlene and First Lady Gibson in praying for the show. One thing is for certain, Jesus is Lord and it takes preachers and all of us to lift him up.
