Question: Can an underactive thyroid cause me to gain weight?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

Yes. An underactive thyroid can cause weight gain and slow your metabolism.

Left unchecked, hypothyroidism can also cause and an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter), edema, swelling, weakness, elevated blood glucoses, hair thinning and loss, and eventually even heart failure or coma.

Treatment is very simple and usually involves one pill once daily.
