Question: What is the best treatment for hypothyroid? My doctor wants to put me on Synthroid, but I’d like to know if there are other options?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

Synthetic thyroid supplementation is the current gold standard treatment for hypothyroidism. Although natural thyroid extract is available, you need to know that most endocrinologists prefer you to use exacting doses only possible with synthetic thyroid use.

In the natural extract, the thyroid content is variable. Endocrinologists prefer synthetic thyroid (as in Synthroid) because the dosing is precise, making treatment and monitoring of your condition more effective and exact.
