Question: My husband has low testosterone and high cholesterol levels. I found a place that would be willing to mix bio-identical hormones for his low-T, which makes him tired all the time, but his physician says it is not good to take them when you have cholesterol problems. What do you think?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

I agree with your doctor. Please forget the bio-identical custom mix.

Drugs are highly quality controlled formulations that are Food and Drug Administration-regulated and subject to random audits for purity and quality control. Custom mixing facilities would subject your husband to random variable doses, depending upon vendor that the pharmacy "trusts" is supplying standardized quality control, so you would have no idea of the exact amount of hormone supplementation received from the compounding pharmacy source.

There are minimal or no internal quality and potency tests at such facilities, and because of this is, compounding is permitted for individual use only, not general distribution. We saw the mess we had with the compounding pharmacy supplying epidural medications for back problems to U.S. hospitals that paralyzed and killed many with meningitis last year.

Why go this route when safe distribution channels are in standard use?
