Question: I had heart-valve surgery several months ago and now feel like I have shortness of breath occasionally. Do I need to worry?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Yes. You need to report your shortness of breath to your cardiologist and your surgeon without delay. Heart valve repair is major surgery, and shortness of breath needs to be assessed.

If these specialists are unable to see you right away, go to your primary care physician or, if necessary, visit a hospital emergency department for further evaluation.
