Is My Husband’s Forgetfulness Alzheimer’s?

Tuesday, 04 Jun 2013 04:50 PM

By Peter Hibberd, M.D.

Question: My husband is forgetting things from one day to the next and sometimes when he goes somewhere he gets confused about what he’s supposed to be doing. He is also becoming very hateful toward me. Could he be in early stages of dementia or Alzheimer’s?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
These are all signs of dementia. These are not so early signs either.  Take him to your primary care physician without delay. Have him evaluated to be sure no structural disorder, such as a stroke or tumor, has affected the frontal lobe of his brain, as these conditions can sneak up silently without loss of movement or sensation.
A CT or MRI scan of his brain is most often reassuring and can help in designing a treatment program.
