Can the flu Shot Give Me Influenza?

By Peter Hibberd, M.D.   |   Monday, 28 Oct 2013 10:09 AM

Question: I don’t get the flu shot because I got the flu from it once. But my doctors says that's not possible. What do you think?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

It is not possible to get the flu from the killed influenza virus in a flu shot. You may, however, get nuisance flu-like symptoms after any vaccine that usually lasts no more than two or three days.

But those symptoms are much better than the potentially life-threatening complications and tremendous work loss and suffering seen quite often with influenza.
