Question: My doctor says I have to lose weight. What works better, exercise or going on a diet?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
The best way to lose weight is burn more calories than you eat. This way, you will achieve your aim. Choosing exercise or dieting exclusively never works well; it's important to do both.
You will need to reduce your caloric intake to match the degree of physical activity you intend to maintain. Remember that muscle bulk is very important. Muscle is a massive calorie consumer, so if you build up muscle by exercise, your diet will not need to be as rigid in the long run, and your endurance and health will see improvement also.
It's best to exercise and reduce your calorie intake mildly. Avoid starvation diets, which are harmful, and can cause other health issues. Exercise enough to lose weight, with a slight dietary adjustment. Our diets can be hugely adjusted by simply avoiding soft drinks, deserts and alcohol, and eating smaller quantities of food.
It's always a good idea to drink plenty of water. You often will feel less hungry if you consume more water.
