Can Drug-Free Methods Ease Anxiety?

Wednesday, 15 May 2013 04:30 PM

By Peter Hibberd, M.D.

Question: I have suffered with anxiety for 3 years now and want to know if there is a way to get rid of it naturally? I don’t like taking medications for anxiety because they make me feel very strange. I’m 45 years old.

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
Anxiety can be treated very effectively without pharmaceuticals. Cognitive behavioral therapy is very effective for anxiety disorders. It is available from specially trained psychiatrists and therapists, but be sure to ask your doctor for a referral.
Hypnosis is not commonly used but is effective in some. Yoga and meditation are common relaxation techniques that are quite effective for anxiety and stress management. Despite the availability of non-medication treatments, most patients seem to prefer pills because they do not wish to invest time needed for these other options.
Also, anxiety can be so overwhelming that medication use may be the best initial option for a rapid return to normal function, and these other strategies can be implemented later.
