What’s Causing My Chronic Pain?

By Peter Hibberd, M.D.   |   Wednesday, 29 May 2013 10:06 AM

Question: I've had pain in my shoulders, back, knees, ankles, and hips for as long as I can remember. My skin also hurts when I touch something cold, and I’m depressed and fatigued a lot of the time. What could be causing these problems?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
Depression can cause you physical pains, so I would recommend that you address this now.

You should have your fatigue and pain symptoms evaluated by your doctor. Serious internal disorders can cause such symptoms and a doctor can determine if you have an autoimmune disorder, malignancy, endocrine disorder, or endocarditis.
Hopefully, your symptoms are caused by depression, and will clear up with effective management. It’s also possible you have osteoarthritis that can be managed conservatively with Tylenol four times daily or perhaps a low dose of an anti-inflammatory such as naproxen.
But you should seek professional consultation without delay.
