Is Beer or Wine a Healthier Choice?

By Peter Hibberd, M.D.   |

Question: My wife often drinks a glass of wine with dinner. I prefer beer. Who's making a healthier choice, or does it even matter?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Statistically, you may be achieving equal benefits, from a health perspective. But your wife may have a slight edge, although the jury is still out.

The flavonoids and polyphenols (antioxidants) in red wine are believed to have more positive health effects than other forms of alcohol, but there is no clear evidence proving red wine is better than beer, white wine, or liquor, in terms of boosting heart health.
