Are Antihistamines Safe for Treating Pet Allergies?

By Peter Hibberd, M.D.   |   Tuesday, 13 Aug 2013 06:46 PM

Question: My grandson is allergic to cats, so when he comes to visit me he takes Zyrtec so he doesn’t have an allergic reaction to my cat. Is there any danger to doing that?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Finally, someone who uses my favorite antihistamine sensibly. Yes, I agree with this regimen and want to congratulate your grandson for his sensible use of Zyrtec.
If he is very reactive, you might suggest a desensitization series of tests with an allergist also.

Antihistamines are safe to use for pet allergies, but are not the only option.
