We have all heard the Christmas song:

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year . . . With the kids jingle-belling . . . and everyone telling you to be of good cheer . . . It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”

As a grief stricken nation mourns the loss of 20 precious, innocent little lives and their six adult protectors at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Conn., it will be harder this year than most to sing such lyrics — not just for the 27,000 people who live in the town once known as the birthplace of Scrabble — but for all Americans.

People will turn to their churches and synagogues to help them cope with such shock and grief.

Local clergy and numerous congregations have already hosted prayer vigils and services to give fellow Americans solace.

“Our hearts are broken today,” said the president in his emotional remarks following the tragedy. He ended by saying, "May God bless the memory of the victims and, in the words of Scripture, heal the broken-hearted and bind up their wounds.”

The interfaith memorial service that followed a few days later contained religious expressions such as “God” and “Kingdom of Heaven.”

Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim religious leaders around the nation rallied to offer support, prayer and comfort.

In dark times, political correctness is often forgotten and people openly express their faith. Unfortunately, we cannot forget that there are modern-day lions out there would take aim at such public expressions, particularly around the holidays.

They seek to diminish and eliminate the true meaning, expression, and symbols of Christmas and Christianity for all Americans.

Centuries ago, in ancient Rome, Christians were thrown to the lions in the coliseum.

Today’s lions — atheists, church-state separatists, the politically correct, and other secularists — are trying, and succeeding in depriving our children of their spirituality in public arenas, events, and schools.

Save for tragic events such as the Newtown slayings, the lions and their progressive allies in the media would probably have protested an event like the interfaith service at Newtown High School.

They would say that expressions of prayer and religious faith should not be tolerated in public schools.

The problem is that these lions against Christmas are winning.

They would tell:
  • the people and children of Newtown to be like Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee and call any “Christmas” tree on public property a “holiday” tree.
  • Newtown officials that they must follow the position of the Santa Monica, Calif. City Council, (upheld by a federal judge) and ban nativity scenes in public parks.
  • Newtown school officials to cancel any trips to any church to see “A Charlie Brown Christmas” as occurred in Little Rock, Ark.
The lions want to kill the meaning and celebration of Christmas for all of us. They don’t want Christmas to be the “most wonderful time of the year” if it involves a school-sponsored Christmas play or concert.

Religious leaders of all faiths had better start fighting back. If they don’t, the day may soon come upon us when the lions go a step further and ask the Federal Communications Commission to ban Christmas carols from the nation’s airwaves.

They might argue that Christmas carols should not be broadcast over public airwaves by government-licensed broadcasters. I can imagine how many of our most beloved Christmas lyrics would prove intolerable for them:

“Joy to the world the Lord has come;”

“Silent Night . . . Christ the savior is born;”

“O Holy Night . . . the night of our savior’s birth;” and,

“Away in a manger . . . the little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head . . ."

Not possible? Given the lack of a united push back, opponents of “Christmas” will be emboldened.

Hopefully, religious leaders will rebel against these modern-day lions who would destroy the very meaning of Christmas for millions of children.

I am not suggesting that the absence of spirituality in public gatherings is to blame for the Newtown slayings — or those in Aurora, Columbine, Virginia Tech.

Allowing children to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas might not have swayed the heartless killers responsible for such tragedies either.

The point is that those who diminish the Christmas celebration also diminish respect for the religious tenets that Christmas is based upon.

Former Governor Mike Huckabee put it well:

“. . . Since we've ordered God out of our schools and communities; the military and public conversations . . . we really shouldn't act so surprised when all hell breaks loose.”

As history teaches, the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
