People feel more empowered when they have learned how to defend themselves. It is a deeply American sentiment that to be robbed of one’s safety and security is paramount to living under tyranny. And that is something we just won’t stand for.

America’s greatest bounty is the peace we enjoy. The sense of security one feels when one closes one’s door, the expectation that when one goes to work there will be a home to return to. Many people would literally give their lives for a little of what we sometimes take for granted.

Perhaps some in the black community fear the self-determination, responsibility, and independence needed to bear arms and participate in the political process will deprive them of their victimhood. That is understandable. Why not give independence a try?

While we should condemn bigotry and extremism, this should not deter us from engaging with more moderate members of the Muslim community to develop constructive solutions to acute problems Chicago is facing. There is some middle ground to be found in a city that is being torn to shreds.
