Perhaps some in the black community fear the self-determination, responsibility, and independence needed to bear arms and participate in the political process will deprive them of their victimhood. That is understandable. Why not give independence a try?

While we should condemn bigotry and extremism, this should not deter us from engaging with more moderate members of the Muslim community to develop constructive solutions to acute problems Chicago is facing. There is some middle ground to be found in a city that is being torn to shreds.

Labor Day reminds us that at one time, labor was the most important commodity in the country. This stands in stark contrast to today. Many people who lost their jobs during the height of the great recession have subsequently dropped out of the labor force.
