This past March, college debate teams from all over the country competed in the 2014 Cross Examination Debate Association’s national championship. Towson University won the national championship, defeating the University of Oklahoma in the final round.

The method by which Towson University won the championship has gone unreported within the mainstream media. Through rap, spoken word poetry, and many uses of the N-word, two African-American female students from Towson University convinced a panel of liberal judges that they deserved the title.

This sounds so ridiculous that I decided to include an excerpt from the debate to prove it really happened: “They say the n*****s always already qu***, that’s exactly the point! It means the impact is that the that the is the impact term, uh, to the afraid, uh, the, that it is a case term to the affirmative because, we, uh, we’re saying that qu*** bodies are not able to survive the necessarily means of the body. Uh, uh, the n***** is not able to survive.”

The topic of debate was on presidential war powers, but the Towson University debate team decided the suppression of black communities by the federal government and “nigga authenticity”was more important.

Time limits were also throw out the window. According to the Daily Caller, one Oklahoma student yelled “F*** the time!” and kept on rapping. The final debate between Towson University and the University of Oklahoma lasted over four hours.

Northwestern University debate coach Aaron Hardy was offended by the violation of debate rules, which prevented the use of the N-word and violating time limits, even though some said the rules were racially motivated.

After the debate was over, Hardy correctly pointed out: “Having minimal rules is not something that reflects a middle-class white bias. I think it is wildly reductionist to say that black people can’t understand debate unless there is rap in it — it sells short their potential.”

It’s hard to know who to be more angry at — the students, professors, or the media. These students broke the rules of debate, failed to address the actual topic of debate, and used offensive and degrading language, which if used by a white person would have made headlines.

The professors and judges not only allowed the students to do this, but actually rewarded their actions by crowning Towson University with first place. And the mainstream media either decided to let this story go unreported or omitted what actually happened.

Our society has been dominated by racism and racial tension for far too long. Moving forward into a post-racial society requires a culture that judges the content and character of individuals, not the color of their skin.

Instead of debating political ideas that have real, present application, this national debate tournament devolved into rehashing old wrongs and expressing language that strips the image of God present in all human beings.

The professors present and the mainstream media should have reported this story and corrected the ignorant, racial, and Neanderthal school of thinking that took place at this so-called national debate tournament.

Shame on the Cross Examination Debate Association. And shame on us for tolerating the dehumanization that was allowed to take place.
