Conservatives Finally Find Anti-Romney Candidate in Santorum

Finally, after months of searching and ups and downs with flash-in-the-pan candidates, conservatives have found their alternative to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in Rick Santorum. A surging Santorum only lost to Romney by a razor-thin eight votes at Tuesday night's Iowa caucus, giving him much needed momentum going into New Hampshire, and giving a right wing uninspired by Romney a new candidate to get behind.

Santorum is in many ways the anti-Romney: born in Virginia, raised in West Virginia and the rural areas of Pennsylvania, he can connect better than most candidates of this electoral cycle with blue collar voters and centrist Democrats, both of which President Obama is in danger of losing. Romney can win corporate votes; Santorum can win votes from guys who carry a lunch pail, votes from cops and firefighters, votes from union carpenters and plumbers. Romney might win their votes at the very end of a general election, but only by default. None of those working class voters would support Romney with a critical election ingredient: enthusiasm.
