Former Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Tuesday charged President Barack Obama with failing to defend America and its allies.

In a speech at before a group of veterans at a campaign office for 2012 GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, McCain said the Obama White House had mislead the public about the cause of last week’s deadly attack on the consulate in Libya.

“We need a commander in chief who will lead from in front,” the 2008 presidential nominee said, according to the Orlando Sentinel. “All it is is a compelling reason for a commander in chief who understands the threat that America is under today.

“This commander in chief refuses to lead. This commander in chief refuses to understand the exceptionalism of America, the obligation that America leads.”

He called it embarrassing that the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said the attack last week on the consulate was “spontaneous,” suggesting that it was caused by a mob angry about the anti-Islam video on the Internet.

“Our veterans’ friends will tell you that people with rocket-propelled grenades and heavy weapons don’t engage in spontaneous attacks,” McCain said. “To say something like that on national television insults the intelligence of every American.”

Meanwhile, John Estrada, 56, a Florida resident who served as the 15th sergeant major of the U. S. Marine Corps, noted Obama’s successes in hunting down and killing Osama Bin Laden and other al Qaeda leaders. He spoke on behalf of the Obama for America campaign,

“The consensus of the veterans that stand by the president … and at the Democratic convention there were a ton of veterans, we believe the president has led with strength and resolve,” said Estrada, who retired from the Marines in 2007, the Sentinel reports. “We are a much stronger and more respected nation than we had been during the past eight years before he took office.”
