Jennifer Granholm, the former Michigan governor who is a national figure for the Democratic Party, appeared on “The Dating Game” television show in 1978 and is now taking some ribbing about it.
The show’s host Jim Lange announced Granholm, then 19, as “cute and curvaceous.”
A video of the show was posted on YouTube by Marty Nislick of Bayside, N.Y., who says he discovered the footage on the Facebook page of a friend who was one of the losing contestants on the show.
“I’m a Democrat of the liberal persuasion, and I have always admired Jennifer Granholm,” he told the Detroit Free Press
. “She was 19 years old, so I think she could be excused for being on a stupid show.”
The show consists of Granholm, who delivered a combative speech at the Democratic convention last week and was widely praised for stirring up Obama's base, is shown asking questions of the three bachelors pursuing her, with innuendo-laden conversation.
At one point, Granholm said, “Roses are red, violets are orange. When I take a shower …,” waiting for one of the bachelors to finish the sentence. One said, “I try the best I can with my sponge.” She responded while giggling, “And, what do you do with your sponge?”
Granholm reacted to the video with a statement through Current TV, where she now hosts a show. “Alas, this is what being a teenager in the '70s gets you: I was having a bad hair decade!” she said.
